4 Things To Do After Your Commercial Driver's License Training

Blog

If you have just signed up for CDL school and started your training, you may not realize that it is merely the start of your journey. When your training is over, you may not know what to expect or do next. Here are some things you need to do after you've been trained.

Pass the CDL Exam

You may already know that you have to do some CDL testing in order to get your license, but you may not be sure what exactly the exam is like. Your training school and CDL manual gives you the information you need to pass the test, but you should be well-practiced and prepared to do the following:

  • Pre-trip inspection, particularly the air brakes
  • 45 degree backup
  • Sharp turns
  • Don't exceed allotted pullups

You may also need to take a drug test and a color blindness test.

Get Signed Up with a Carrier

For more training and experience, it is a good idea to sign up with a professional carrier. You may want to carry loads on your own, but a carrier will train you in additional driving techniques and allow you to gain experience of all kinds. You are likely to get a trainer to ride with you for a while.

Get Your Diet Under Control

Once you start driving regularly, you may realize that you don't get as much exercise as you did before. To avoid packing on pounds, it is necessary to get your diet under control.

Instead of stopping for fast food, bring a crockpot or a slow cooker with you on the road. To avoid making a mess, cook meals inside an oven roaster bag. If you want to snack on something, try not to go overboard on carbs and stick with healthier snacks like cheese and vegetable sticks.

Design an Exercise Regiment

Because your body will be in one position for much of the day, it's important that you make time each day to stretch your legs and get your body moving. While you might not be able to stop at a gym when you're out on the road, take a brisk walk or bring some small free weights along with you.

Now that you have a better idea of what you should be doing when your training is over, be sure to plan accordingly. Talk with your CDL school instructors for more information about what to do when your training is complete. To learn more, contact a company like Center For Transportation Safety
